U.S. Immigration has released a revised version of Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification. Form I-9 verification – now 30 years old – requires U.S. employers to verify the identity and employment authorization of all new hires, including U.S. citizens.

The new version dated November 14, 2016 is already available for use, but the current version (dated March 8, 2013) can continue to be used by employers up to January 21, 2017. From January 22, only the new version must be used.

The new version of Form I-9 contains the following changes:
– When you complete the form on the government website https://www.uscis.gov/i-9, there are new features such as drop-down lists, calendars for dates, and prompts have been added to ensure information is entered correctly.
– Section 1 now asks for “other last names used” rather than “other names used”.
– More than one preparer and translator can now be named and a supplemental page has also been added for the preparer/translator.
– A dedicated area has been included for additional information.
– The form instructions for completing each field have been separated from the form itself.
