Since President Trump has taken office and executed multiple Immigration-related Executive Orders, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested more than 41,000 individuals, which is a 37.6 percent increase over the same period in 2016.  Such an increase is no small feat, considering President Obama was often referred to as the “Deporter-In-Chief.”  Yet, ICE estimates that it makes approximately 400 arrests per day, and that nearly 75 percent of those arrested are convicted criminals.

In its statement, ICE details the particularly egregious criminal convictions of five of those arrested, in an attempt to highlight its achievements. However, immigration advocates worry about the law-abiding undocumented immigrants who are caught up in these arrests, as arrests of immigrants with no criminal records has more than doubled since the same period last year. The significant increase in arrests, coupled with an already backlogged Immigration Court system will prove to be a difficult challenge in the months ahead.  While the law itself has not changed significantly, it is clear that President Trump does intend to make good on his campaign promise.  Therefore, it is essential that those who have questions about their immigration status contact an Immigration Attorney as soon as possible. As always, Dayzad Law will continue to monitor the changes in immigration law and its effects on our clients.
