Trump’s nomination for USCIS Director, Lee Francis Cissna, sat for his confirmation hearing last month before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Currently the Director of Immigration Policy at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Cissna served as a key advisor for Trump on immigration during the campaign.

It is no surprise then that many of Cissna’s responses echoed Trump’s hardline anti-immigration rhetoric. In fact, many senators were critical that Cissna lacked specificity in his answers besides deferring to the President’s current agenda.

The irony of his own mother immigrating to the US from Peru more than 50 years ago is not lost on the public as Cissna elaborated on his intent to carry out Trump’s executive order travel ban and roll back many Obama-era humanitarian policies including keeping asylum-seeking families together, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) benefits, and protections for crime victims.

The Senate has not yet scheduled a confirmation vote for Cissna’s nomination.
