USCIS has automatically extended the validity of green cards to 24 months for those who have timely applied to renew their 10-year green cards. Most lawful permanent residents (except conditional residents) must apply to renew their green cards every 10 years. Once they apply, the government issues a receipt notice. The receipt notice paired with the expired green card serves as evidence of a permanent resident’s lawful status while the renewal application remains pending. Proof of permanent residence is important for returning from travel abroad or to demonstrate employment authorization. Because of government backlogs, USCIS has extended the validity period on the receipt notice from 12 to 24 months. Receipt notices will now reflect the extended 24-month validity period. USCIS has also started printing amended receipt notices for those applicants who have an application already pending.
It is good news that the government is taking steps to address their delayed processing times. However, the best way to avoid these issues all together is to apply for U.S. citizenship. Citizenship is a more secure immigration status and has more benefits than being a green card holder. If you think you might be eligible to apply for citizenship, ask us how!
